I want to become a video game designer, but my Mom wants me to become an engineer, I need some advice?

I am a sophomore i high school, and next year I will leave the school campus for the second half of every day to go take some engineering classes at Tulsa Technology Center. My Mom wants me to continue with this and become an engineer when I get older. I wouldn’t mind being an engineer, but its not what I want to do most. I really want to become a video game designer ( I want to make models and landscapes, or maybe a level designer). I have looked into it, and I have talked to my Mom about it. She thinks I should keep working and focusing on becoming an engineer because she thinks it would make me happier, and it would be easier for me to get job, etc. I showed her video game designer salaries, but she thinks it would be too hard for me to get a job as a video game designer. If anyone has any advice, information, etc., I would GREATLY appreciate it. Also, does anyone have any advice on what I should do if I do try to become a video game designer?

What you do with your future is YOUR decision, not your mom’s. And, like you, I am also a sophomore who wishes to become a game designer. I have looked into classes that I need to take and math and art classes are the important ones. Your mother may think she knows what is best, but that doesn’t mean that she does. If you want to be a game designer, then go ahead. I suggest that you have a back-up plan, in case things don’t work out though. As long as you take the right courses and work hard I’m sure you can have a career in game design!! 
